The two salt lakes of Torrevieja and La Mata are a natural protected park.
They are the biggest and oldest salt lakes in Europe.
There is very little vegetation in the salt lake ,because of too high level of salinity. But there are at least 1000 different species of birds, like the flamingo’s.
In La Mata Village there are grape fields. Traditionally they make a very fine sweet white desert wine.

The reservoir was built in the 1980s to provide water for the farms and local communities.
